After being severely underwhelmed by the existing watch market while searching for his graduation watch, 29 year old Industrial Designer Tyler Worden set out to design and build his own watch in the exact style, specifications and emotional impact that he desired.
He began with buying a loup (watch makers magnifying glass) and a handful of iconic affordable watches. Instead of Netflix, he would put on the loupe and study each angle and facet of the watch, trying to understand the thought process of the watch designers that came before him.
Laying down late one evening, staring at the ceiling, he 3D modelled his ideal watch in his head. He saw it in his mind’s eye floating in front of him as he sculpted, stretched, slimmed and sliced the watch into what he desired. He compiled and condensed all his knowledge of watch design and product design principles generally to create his ideal watch.
And there it was, the watch now known as the ALL STEEL floating in front of him, about 2ft tall. The case and bracelet flowing seamlessly as one, neither one more important than the other. A cohesive design; as it should be. The case of the ALL STEEL would later be elegantly adapted to fit a 22mm strap thereby creating the BRASH case design.
As an Industrial designer, Tyler Worden was able to design the case from scratch, creating multiple prototypes using rapid manufacturing techniques.
He applied the concept of Via Negativa to his designs by asking himself not “What should I add?” but rather “What must I take away”.
This mindset shift allows the design to boiled down the essence of what he was aiming to achieve; A rugged outer case juxtaposed against a soft, playful dial.
On his 4th major prototype, the aptly named Via Negativa was born.
After 2 years of design and development, Tyler Worden created a watch from scratch that is absolutely unique and exactly what he desired years earlier.
He told himself that if he can make one then he can make two and if demand was there he would make Worden watches for anyone who wanted one.
Fast forward to now and Worden has sold dozens of watches, released three themes, collaborated with an internationally displayed Artist, Liam Reynolds, and has exhibited at both the Vancouver Timepiece Show and the Toronto Timepiece Show.

From building skateboard ramps, to stencil art to a post-modern chair, Tyler Worden has always been both a Designer and an Artist. After high school, he took 5 years to live in new cities and travel the world with the goal to understand himself and his place in the world. One afternoon, while relaxing in a park overlooking Prague, Tyler was told about a university program he had never heard of before; Industrial Design.
Industrial Design is the art or process of designing mass-manufactured products. Upon his return to Canada, he decided this was the direction he must head in and took evening classes to get the three prerequisites necessary to merely apply to the Industrial Design program.
2 years later, he completed the courses and applied with a portfolio of his work including a homerun piece; a tentioned leather chain designed and built by himself. With a 1 in 5 shot of getting accepted, his chances were slim but he knew what he wanted and did not apply anywhere else except the best in Canada; Carleton University’s School of Industrial Design. He was accepted in 2017 and graduated in 2021.
Tyler Worden believes products should be usable, dependable and unobtrusive first and foremost. Style is absolutely necessary but not at the cost to the user experience.
When it comes to a watch, he believes the bare minimum is
- Easy to read the time
- Dependable to tell the correct time
- Comfortable on the wrist
For these reasons, he has become a proponent of quartz movements for their
- Superior accuracy over mechanical movements
- Superior power reserve over mechanical movements
- Superior drop resistance over mechanical movements
- Negligible servicing costs compared to mechanical movements
And while there is a wonderful romance to a mechanical movement, it is not always the right choice for a watch owner.
Style is the second pillar and the watch industry has been inundated with derivative designs of vintage watches, divers or “tool” watches. And while there is absolutely demand for these designs, there is no need for another watch brand to produce them nor does Tyler want to offer the same old same old.
Instead, Worden Watch is producing watches that are completely unique and elegantly simple. Fusing timeless watch design principles into a shape that garners compliments from both watch enthusiasts and non watch enthusiasts alike, the distinct circle within a square design in a calling card for Worden; Where that shimmer of light off top face of the case signals a Worden watch 20 feet away.

Worden creates timepieces that feel more like wrist sculptures than watches. Each design starts as an artistic concept, evolves through meticulous design iterations, and is released in small numbered drops. Every watch connects you to our shared human experience.
All designs come directly from Tyler Worden, the founder and designer behind the brand. Every angle, proportion, and material choice is considered in-house before production begins. On occasion, Tyler teams up with a artist, designer, or creator to make unique collab-watches but ultimately, each Worden sold has Tyler’s stamp of approval.
Worden watches are produced in small batches through trusted manufacturing partners in Hong Kong, then occasionally modified, re-assembled, and inspected in the Worden Watch Studio in Guelph, Ontario, Canada. This blend of precision manufacturing and human touch ensures dependability and soul in every piece.
More specifically, Via Negativa, Bubble Gum and SunnySide have cases manufactured in Guelph, Ontario, Canada using foreign parts to complete the watch. The following themes will be manufactured in Hong Kong.
Each theme is released in a finite run, and once it’s gone, it’s gone for good. The goal isn’t to flood the market but to create a collection of meaningful works that age like fine wine.
Every watch goes through human hands during manufacturing, finishing, and assembly. While advanced machining handles precision, artistry takes over in the assembly and quality control stages to ensure each watch is as it should be.
Yes. Each Worden is designed to be lived in, not stored away. The cases, crystals, and components are chosen for long-term durability while maintaining a refined, sculptural feel.
New drops are released only when the design feels complete. Expect a few drops per year.
The heart symbolizes the belief that design should be made with love. It’s a reminder that every decision, from proportion to polish, was made with care and intention.
